When you apply for your contractor license, you must provide proof of insurance. Your city or county may require you obtain a business license to conduct business in their jurisdiction. Contractors acting as sole proprietors, or qualifying persons for a construction related business entity, must pass a two part exam. Licenses are required for all residential building contractors and residential remodelers who contract with a homeowner to construct or improve dwellings by offering more than one special skill.
All residential building contractors and residential remodelers who contract with an owner to construct or improve dwellings for habitation by one to four families (including detached garages) and perform two or more special skills must be licensed unless exempt under one of the provisions noted below. The licensing requirement also applies to any person acting as a “spec” homebuilder. Contractors that work in one field, such as masonry, do not need to get a license. The one exception to this rule is roofing contractors. In most states, a convicted felon cannot get license that requires bonding. A convicted felon is not allowed to possess a firearm.
